Which B2B marketing trends really matter?

The B2B marketing trends that matter for 2027 are the ones your buyers already show in 2026 data. They start research in AI answers, click less, check claims with people, decide in larger groups and want proof before they sign. Two popular trends are overrated for small teams: buying AI tools before fixing processes, and paying creators before your own voice works.
Every trend comes with a 2026 primary source, labelled with month and year, and my verdict: matters, partly, or overrated. The verdicts are my view.
For how a B2B marketing system works as a whole, start with the guide to B2B marketing.
Which B2B marketing trends matter for 2027?
Five trends matter for almost every B2B company in 2027: AI answers as the start of research, fewer clicks from search, AI visibility you can finally measure, buyers who verify claims with people, and bigger buying groups. Trials and AI agents matter for some. More spending on AI tools and paid creator programs are overrated for small teams.
| Trend | 2026 evidence | My verdict |
|---|---|---|
| AI answers start the research | 94 % of business buyers use AI while buying (Forrester, January 2026) | Matters |
| Fewer clicks from search | 58 % lower click-through rate for the top result when an AI Overview shows (Ahrefs, February 2026) | Matters |
| AI visibility becomes measurable | AI reporting in Search Console for all websites (Google, August 2026) | Matters |
| Buyers verify with people | 69 % prefer to validate AI insights with sales reps (Gartner, May 2026) | Matters |
| Bigger buying groups | 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers per decision (Forrester, January 2026) | Matters |
| Trials as proof | More than 60 % of buyers use a trial (Forrester, January 2026) | Partly, mainly software |
| AI agents in buying | Predicted to influence 75 % of B2B purchase decisions (Forrester, October 2026) | Partly, too early to build for |
| More budget for AI tools | 15.3 % of marketing budgets go to AI, 30 % of CMOs report mature readiness (Gartner, May 2026) | Overrated |
| Paid creators and video | 82 % of marketers who use creators call influencer campaigns essential for measurable ROI (LinkedIn survey, March 2026) | Overrated for small teams until your own voice works |
A word on the evidence. Forrester, Gartner and LinkedIn sell research, advice or ads, and most of these numbers come from surveys. Gartner's CMO survey, for example, mostly covers companies with more than $1 billion in revenue. Read the numbers as direction.

Why is AI search the biggest shift for B2B marketing?
AI search is the biggest shift because it moves your buyer's first contact with your company into an answer you don't write. Forrester reported in January 2026 that 94 % of business buyers use AI during their buying process. Google said in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch.
The cost shows up in clicks. Ahrefs compared December 2023 with December 2025 and reported in February 2026 that an AI Overview now correlates with a 58 % lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page. Seer Interactive's April 2026 update, across 53 brands, adds the useful part. Averaged over a full year of data, informational queries where a brand was cited in the AI Overview had an organic click-through rate of 2.07 %. Brands that weren't cited got 0.94 %, about 1.6 % without one dominant account.
Since August 31, 2026, Google Search Console shows how pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, for all websites worldwide, with impressions and the pages that appear, by country. The guide on measuring organic and AI search visibility shows where to look.
My verdict: matters, more than anything else on this list. Where Google shows an AI answer above the results, being the source it cites is now worth more than ranking below it. How to get there is in the guide to AI SEO.
Why do buyers check your claims more than ever?
Buyers check more because AI makes research faster and less reliable at the same time. In Gartner's survey of 645 B2B buyers, published in May 2026, 69 % said they prefer to validate AI-generated insights with sales reps. 51 % said they are more likely to meet misleading information from generative AI, and 49 % from a sales rep.
Forrester's predictions for 2027, published on October 21, 2026, point the same way. Buyers will double their human interactions to validate AI recommendations, and two-thirds of providers will lose deals because buyers can't verify their claims. That's a forecast, and it matches the surveys.
In a Gartner release from March 2026, 67 % of B2B buyers preferred a rep-free experience. They still want a person when it's time to check. Your sales team's job shifts from explaining to confirming.
My verdict: matters. The cheapest response is proof that's easy to check: numbers with dates, customers you may name, and pages that say exactly what your sales deck says. A case study that gets cited does that work for the buyer and for the AI.
What do bigger buying groups and trials change?
Bigger buying groups mean more people to convince, and many of them sit outside your reach. Forrester's State of Business Buying 2026, based on nearly 18,000 buyers, counts 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers in a typical decision. Procurement is a decision-maker in 53 % of buying cycles, and more than 60 % of buyers use a trial.
The nine external people matter most for marketing. Peers, consultants and analysts don't read your nurture emails. They read what's public, including what AI answers say about you. How buying groups differ from consumer purchases is covered in the difference between B2B and B2C.
Trials are a narrower trend. Forrester analyst Barbara Winters writes that just over a third of buyers planned to convert to a fully paid version with the same provider. If you sell services, a paid pilot or a fixed-scope first project does the same job.
My verdict: buying groups matter for everyone, trials mainly if you sell software. Write material for each role in the group and start with procurement. In my view that's the reader most B2B websites forget.
Will AI agents buy on behalf of your customers?
Some will, but not soon enough to justify a separate project for a small team. Forrester predicted in October 2026 that AI agents will influence 75 % of B2B purchase decisions. Google announced in May 2026 that information agents launch first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, alongside agentic booking and, for categories such as home repair, calls to businesses on the user's behalf.
Influence is a soft word. An agent that summarizes three vendors influences the decision, and that's mostly AI search with more steps. The same work applies: public, consistent facts about what you sell, for whom and with which proof.
My verdict: partly. Watch it and don't build for it yet. If your facts are clean on your own site and consistent everywhere else, an agent can read them. If they aren't, no agent strategy will fix that.
Is spending more on AI marketing tools a trend worth following?
Spending more on AI tools is the trend I'd skip in its usual form. Gartner's CMO Spend Survey, published in May 2026, found that CMOs put 15.3 % of marketing budgets into AI. 70 % call becoming an AI leader a critical goal for 2026, yet only 30 % report mature AI readiness. Budgets stayed almost flat at 7.8 % of revenue, after 7.7 % in 2025.
Forrester adds a prediction for 2027: after cutting as many as 25 % of roles on AI gains that don't arrive, most CMOs will cut programs or accept reduced capacity. The tools aren't the problem. The order is.
My take: most companies don't need more software. They need better systems. In a small team, AI pays off when you pick one recurring process, such as research, first drafts or reporting, and rebuild it end to end with a person checking the output. The guide on where to start with AI in B2B marketing shows which processes come first.
My verdict: overrated as a budget line, essential as a way of working.
Do creators and video work for a small B2B team?
Creators and video can work in B2B, yet the 2026 evidence for them is weaker than the headlines. LinkedIn's 2026 Global B2B Marketing Outlook, a YouGov survey of 1,299 B2B marketers published in March 2026, found that 82 % of marketers who work with creators call influencer campaigns essential to deliver measurable ROI. 81 % of B2B CMOs believe video accelerates sales cycles compared to other formats.
Look at who's speaking: marketers rating their own programs, in a survey published by the platform that sells creator and video ads. That's a reason for caution, and no proof of the opposite.
My own LinkedIn numbers are a small sample, and I treat them that way. A personal founder announcement clearly outperformed a news-driven AI post. Pure AI thought leadership did substantially worse. My reading: a real person saying something specific did better.
My verdict: overrated for small teams as a paid program. Before you pay a creator, make sure the founder or one expert in your company posts with a real point of view. The guide to LinkedIn for B2B marketing covers how.
How do you decide which trends to follow?
Follow a trend when your own buyers already show it, it fits a channel you run, your team can carry it and you can see a signal within one quarter. With a small team, this filter matters more than the trend itself.
- Your buyers show it. At least 3 of your last 10 won or lost deals mention it, for example a buyer who found you through ChatGPT or asked for a trial.
- It fits a channel you run. It improves your website, your sales material or one channel you already work every week. A new channel counts as a new project.
- Your team can carry it. It needs no more than 4 hours a week, or one person for one month to set up.
- You see a signal in 90 days. You can name the number that should move, such as AI impressions in Search Console, demo requests or the length of your sales cycle.
Four yes means start now. Three means a small test with a fixed end date. Two or fewer means park it for six months. These thresholds are my rule of thumb, not a published standard.

A worked example: AI search passes if 3 of your last 10 deals came in through ChatGPT, Perplexity or an AI Overview. It fits your existing website, rewriting ten key pages answer-first fits into 4 hours a week over a quarter, and Search Console gives the signal. Four yes. Paid creators usually fail a five-person company on questions two and three.
What to do this week
One week is enough to sort the trends for your own company. Check what your buyers did in recent deals, look at your AI visibility and pick the one trend that passes the filter. Park the rest in writing.
- Open Search Console and check the new AI reporting for your ten most visited pages.
- Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the three questions your buyers ask most. Note who gets cited.
- For your last ten deals, write down how the buyer first found you and how many people took part.
- Pick one claim on your homepage. Can a buyer verify it in under a minute?
- Write one page or section for procurement: pricing logic, contract terms, security, references.
- Run your trend list through the four questions above. Keep the one with four yes.
If the list is long and nobody has time to run it, a one-day Momentum Workshop sets positioning, ideal customer and the first channel, so the trend you keep has a home. Your team leaves with a plan it can run on Monday.
Trends change every year. Buyers who want proof they can check will still be there in 2028.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest B2B marketing trend for 2027?
AI search. Forrester reported in January 2026 that 94 % of business buyers use AI while buying, and Google said in May 2026 that AI Mode passed one billion monthly users. Clicks from classic results are falling where AI Overviews show. In my view, being cited in AI answers now counts more than ranking, so start with clear, answer-first pages and checkable proof.
Will AI agents replace B2B buyers?
Not on the 2026 evidence. Forrester predicts that AI agents will influence 75 % of B2B purchase decisions, and influence is not the same as deciding. Gartner found in May 2026 that 69 % of buyers prefer to validate AI-generated insights with sales reps. Agents will gather and compare information. People in the buying group still sign, and they want to check first.
How can I see whether my company appears in AI Overviews?
Use Google Search Console. Since August 31, 2026, Google shows all websites worldwide how their pages appear in generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, including impressions and which pages appear, by country. For ChatGPT and Perplexity there is no equivalent report yet, so ask them your buyers' questions by hand once a month and note who gets cited.
Which B2B marketing trends from 2025 still apply?
Most of them. AI in buyer research, rep-free buying and large buying groups all appear again in the 2026 sources in this article. What changed in 2026 is measurement and verification: Google added AI reporting to Search Console, and Gartner and Forrester both describe buyers who check AI output with people.
Should a small B2B company follow marketing trends at all?
Only the ones that pass a filter. My rule of thumb has four questions: your buyers show it, it fits a channel you already run, your team can carry it in about 4 hours a week, and you can see a signal within 90 days. Four yes means start, three means test, two or fewer means park it. Most trends fail small teams on time.
